Getting More Web Traffic: Content is King

Getting More Web Traffic: Content is King

Website Links

No matter how you slice the SEO (search engine optimization) pie, the factors that will raise your website’s search engine rankings more than anything else are the  Three Rs: Relevant, Recent, Regularly updated content. While RSS feeds and aggregators can add specific value to your site, they don’t take the place of original text content in the eyes of search engines.

The keys to good content?

Experts agree that the main factors to consider are:

  • Original, relevant content or information, on a regular basis
  • Quality control your content for factual accuracy, spelling and grammar
  • Complete and comprehensive coverage of the topic being covered
  • The articles are something you would want to share, recommend or bookmark

The last point is key. Search engines have begun to factor in social signals like Google's "+1" and Facebook ‘likes’ for Bing. 44% of B2B marketing experts say the impact of these social signals are positive and 57% of marketers say that new customers have come in via company blogs. Since blogs and social media sites are where personal opinions are expressed, they have become key to the search engine optimization equation.

Links

Relevant backlinks (from other websites to yours) remain important, as they too, by their very presence, are a way of endorsing your website. These genuine, inbound links from other websites are the kind you really want to cultivate. As well, comprehensive, well-researched web content that you write for your website will usually contain outbound links to relevant sites of interest. Reciprocal links on links pages just don’t cut it anymore.

What we know:

  • Generally speaking, websites with more content (articles of 1,000-4,000 words) rank higher than those with 500 word articles. Longer articles usually mean that your website is sharing more value.
  • Google looks at bounce rates and the average time a viewer spends on your website, and can extrapolate whether or not they are finding the information they need.
  • Google now takes around 30 days to update your website’s rankings after you make changes.
  • Google generally ranks websites higher if they have large followings with Twitter, Facebook, or Google+.
  • Links remain important, especially if they are relevant and of high quality.
  • Don’t expect to rank well if your website has more ads than content.

So, we can conclude that:

If you have a good amount of page content, a strong following on social media websites, relevant and high quality links, a good content-to-advertisement ratio and a low bounce rate, your website will rank well.

Dated Techniques

While these used to be key practices, they just don’t work anymore:

  • Meta description tags
  • Link pages with reciprocal links
  • Redundant keyword density (high repetition of key words and phrases)

Is Your Website Providing a Quality User Experience?

Let Google Analytics Show You!

Google Analytics - Quality Website Use ExperienceGoogle won’t let the cat out of the bag regarding specifics of their new search engine algorithm update, but we do know that they will reward websites that provide a quality user experience by ranking them more highly than those that don’t.

So... How Can You Tell???

If you don’t currently use Google Analytics, now is the time to jump in. Everything you need to determine how well your website delivers is in the customized reports that Google Analytics will email to you on a regular basis – daily, weekly or monthly as you wish.

Don’t forget - Google is checking websites to ensure your visitors are getting value from your site: they are checking the average time spent on your site, the number of visitors that return to your site, bounce rates and number of pages visited.

Google Analytics is THE tool to use to determine the value your website is providing to visitors.

StonehouseTeas.com

StonehouseTeas.com

Well-researched and thoughtful, this site is like a good cup of tea – a pure pleasure. There’s a lot to know about tea – but only if you want to! The ‘Tea & Health’ pages on this new website supply lots of great information about tea – from antioxidant and weight-loss properties to vitamin content; or...

Ten categories of teas (and numerous types in each category) as well as accessories, gifts and specials are available to purchase online. Tanya, owner of the store, can easily add, delete or change the teas using Ubercart – the shopping cart that works in conjunction with the CMS (content management system) that was built into the website.

A training session was included in the cost of the website, so adding a special or changing a description or price takes Tanya about the same amount of time as brewing a cup of tea! www.StonehouseTeas.com

New Year’s Resolutions - 8 weeks into 2012

How Are Yours Holding Up?

We’re happy to report that our New Year's Resolution is going strong... "Be creative every day!"

What does "creativity" mean to you? Often people think it’s about art – and it can be – but you don’t need to be an artist to be creative.

CreativityCreativity, as they say, is the mother of invention. It can be defined as the tendency to generate or recognize ideas, alternatives, or possibilities that may be useful in solving problems and communicating with others.

There are many ways to be creative. Inventing the light bulb was creative. So is figuring out a way to make the early meeting at work and get the kids to school on time without leaving them at home alone. It all depends on the issue at hand. It may be about what to wear today or ordering the stock your customers will be attracted to. It could about finding a new job or the right doctor. Whether your problem is tiny or gargantuan, there are solutions, and finding solutions that work (whether they are logistical, technical, scientific, linguistic or artistic) is at the core of creativity.

Here at Chameleon Creative, we work at solving a multitude of problems every day – creating artwork, dealing with technical issues, communicating with clients and developing solutions to your needs. We are all creative, each in our own way, and SO ARE YOU!

Draw a Stickman OnlineHave fun with this, and pass it on!
(Hint: it doesn't matter how well you draw!)

The Manufacturing Revolution is Coming!

3D ScanningWe brought you a video of a 3D printer last year, but did you know that they’ve been around for 30 years? Everyday objects like pens and lampshades, wrenches and parts are being made with this technology – and items like teeth and (gulp!) body parts are in developmental stages.

Powerful new 3-D digital production software turns CAD files into accurate, durable prototypes and end-use products using high-performance thermoplastics. It may have been around for a while, but it's gaining traction in a big way!

View this video about a fascinating topic that is set to change the future of manufacturing.

MOBILE WEBSITES – the next BIG thing!

Do you travel much? Maybe, maybe not; but many of your potential customers do. One of the great conveniences of a mobile device such as a Smartphone or tablet is the ability to book services while on the road – hotels and restaurant spring to mind, but how about a boater whose yacht is having engine trouble and needs repair? Or a family traveling with a sick pet that needs care? Does your business have a mobile website that these potential customers can access?

Check out your own website on your Smartphone. Is the menu too small to read easily? Does it scroll sideways? Does a slideshow that looks great on a big screen take too long to load? Does the Contact Us form hang up? Argh!

Although we haven’t yet created a mobile website for ourselves, (it’s coming, we promise!) we’d like you to see one that we did recently for Ole’s Hakai Pass.

Mobile Features:

  • View the mobile site with your Smartphone – it will automatically identify the mobile version, even though the URL is the same one you access with your computer for the full version: www.ole.ca
  • The Search bar is available at the bottom of the screen
  • Click the Menu icon for easy-touch navigation
  • No lateral scrolling
  • Test is in a legible font, and large enough to read
  • Photo galleries are viewable
  • Contact Us form works beautifully!

Mobile features that simplify your website, optimizing it for the small screen will ensure that Smartphone users will get your message when they need it!

Comparison: Regular Website vs. Mobile Version

YOUR WEBSITE CAN DO THAT
Live Streaming Video

You’re putting on an event: a fund raiser, an AGM or a product launch and you need to stream it live to the Internet for everyone to see (or perhaps just specific viewers). You know it can be done, but how?

The Laich-Kwil-Tach Treaty Society approached us about streaming video so that their AGM could be virtually attended by members from across North America from the comfort of their homes or even from their Smartphones. The event went off without a hitch on November 4th and 5th.

A dedicated hardware device simulating professional video equipment enabled the video stream to be of high quality. Live monitoring of the feeds allowed us to make sure there were no performance issues. An archive video of the AGM was created and posted to the website (www.lkts.ca) so that it can be viewed by those who have a access to the password protected page.

Now any of our clients can host a live streaming event directly on their website. A simple webcam and laptop might be all you need! It’s a simple explanation for some pretty serious infrastructure. Call us for more information.

Facebook for Business

Facebook For BusinessFacebook: It’s All About 'Word of Mouth'.

Most people say that word-of-mouth advertising is the best kind. Why? Because when someone you trust recommends a business whose services you need, that business gains credibility with you. The odds have been tipped in favour of the business your friend recommended based on their experience, and the likelihood of your purchase from them has been increased.

Let’s put the shoe on the other foot - your business is the one that’s been recommended, and a potential customer is researching your company on on the Internet. They read a bit about who you are, what you do, and see that you have a Facebook 'Like' icon on your website. They think, "Sure, I like what I see," and click the icon. What happens next?

By clicking that icon, this potential customer has just become "friend" (or Fan) with your business. This means that when you post an article or a choice bit of news, this viewer will see it on their Facebook News Feed page. You now have an opportunity to earn this person’s respect and trust by posting relevant and timely information that will be of use. By doing so, you begin to build a relationship. Because you are in the process of becoming an authoritative source to your viewers,  it is critical to respect this relationship. Bombarding prospective customer with irrelevant or too much information can have them "unfriend" you in a heartbeat, so be selective about the news you post.

There are a number of good reasons for businesses to participate in and maintain a presence on Facebook. Here are a few:

  • Get found by people who are searching for your products or services
  • Connect and engage with current and potential customers
  • Create a community around your business
  • Promote other content you create, including webinars, blog articles, or other resources
  • Generate leads for your business

Facebook, used wisely, can be a valuable part of your marketing strategy, creating exponential exposure that go far beyond what you might expect. We’d like to help you get started! Give us a call today: 250-287-7117.

Newsletter Sep. 2011: Smartphones - The Ultimate Shopping Companion

Smartphones

YouTubeThe Mobile Movement:
Understanding Smartphone Consumers

We use Smartphones to find restaurant menus, movie times, compare prices on products, to find shopping coupons and so much more. And we do it at home, on the run - even in the stores where we’re shopping. When we use our Smartphones this way, we’re not just browsers, we’re hunters!

Smartphones are creating informed consumers. The information they find on the mobile website they visit is likely to lead to a purchase, because hunters are ready to shoot: or in this case, to buy.

When developing marketing tools for the internet, most large online companies go "mobile first" because of the exponential growth of Smartphones – the fastest growing sector of Internet access by far.

So how does this impact your business?

Having a mobile-friendly website that is well-positioned in local searches is just as important as having a "normal" website. Smartphone "hunters" are on the lookout for a meal, a movie or a deal on products or services that they want RIGHT NOW. Are you ready for them?

Your "regular" website can form the basis for your mobile website however, mobile sites are effectively designed to fit the smaller screens of hand-held devices. Pages are simplified, unnecessary images removed, and slow-loading content such as video is reduced.

What is a QR Code?QR Code

A QR Code is a 2D barcode (designed to be read by Smartphones at high speed) that contains encoded information such as a phone number, a web address or other data. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background.

Post a QR Code on an item (or a poster, business card, brochure) that you want a viewer to be able to find more information about. The viewer will scan it with their phone and the intended information will be displayed on their Smartphone: a webpage, a video, or information to be stored in the contact list. Google+... the Newest Facebook Rival?

the Google+ Project Last week, Google announced its entry into the world of social networking with the introduction of Google+, a social network that uses Google's many services. The intention is to be different from other networks with an emphasis on privacy and with a different skew -instead of connecting with your friends, Google+ aims to focus connections around specific groups - such as schoolmates, colleagues, families, projects, or groups of friends - kind of a cross between Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn to make "sharing online more like sharing in real life." High-quality video chats will be a definite plus.

Check it out. (currently in beta on an invitation-only basis.) After the demise of Buzz, Wave and other failed attempts, this could be Google's most serious leap yet into the social-networking arena.

Just days after Google rolled out Google+, Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg promised that Facebook would "launch something awesome." Could it be video chat? Tune in to Facebook this week to see what Zuckerburg's counter to Google's announcement is all about!

Is your Website SmartPhone-Friendly?

The number of Internet-friendly mobile devices including smart-phones and tablets has doubled in less than a year, (5 billion mobile users world-wide) and more people than ever before are holding the World Wide Web in their hands. That's why having a mobile version of your website is one of the most important marketing issues today. Because the mobile market has exploded so quickly, most websites are unsuitable for mobile viewing. Down-sized to fit smaller screens, they look jumbled, confused and take far too long to load.

In most cases, your mobile site should be simpler than your standard website. Simplifying the standard format means maintaining the basic look and feel, but may require re-doing the navigation menu, minimizing graphics by eliminating all but the most important images, breaking up the text into shorter paragraphs and onto multiple pages, and doing away with pop-ups and new windows.

Using your standard website as a starting point, we can develop a mobile-friendly version for you that will get your message across with your customary style but in a simpler fashion, suitable for a small screen. It will work in tandem with your standard site, automatically recognizing and displaying the mobile version when accessed by a smart-phone.

Give us a call to discuss options that would make the most sense to mobile device users - and to you!

An Ear to the Ground: Problems You Need to Know About!

Office Outlook 2007 Update Results in Email Issues
A recent Microsoft Office 2007 update has caused difficulties for some of our clients. If your computer has automatically downloaded the Office Outlook 2007 update 2412171, you may be experiencing issues in Outlook 2007. To resolve this issue, download and install the current version of update 2412171 from the Microsoft Download Center.

Trouble with Explorer 9
Over the past few weeks we’ve had calls from clients who are experiencing difficulties with filling in forms online, with games and even with editing their own websites. The common issue? All had recently downloaded Microsoft’s new browser, Explorer 9.

Our advice?  At least until Ex-9 is out of the beta-testing stages, download Firefox 4 and use it instead. For all the reasons in the article below, at least give it a test-drive. Odds are, you won’t look back!

Battle of the Browsers

Windows Internet Explorer 9    VSMozilla Firefox

It’s the battle of the browsers as two technology monoliths go head-to-head. In one corner is Mozilla, a not-for-profit organization priding itself on delivering an experience centered on the individual web user. In the other is Microsoft, the same company that has delivered notoriously lackluster performances in the past. Who will come out on top?

The Verdict?
Though both Internet Explorer 9 and Firefox 4 are much better than their respective predecessors, there is no denying that Mozilla’s offering is clearly superior. More compliant, cleaner, more productive, faster, and lacking less than Microsoft’s program, Firefox 4 takes the steps necessary to push the browser forward while maintaining the same functionality as its predecessors. There you have it.

Could Your Website Use a MAKEOVER?

The website makeover examples below are just three of many web "facelifts" we've done recently.  In these cases, we've revamped the look, added functionality to benefit both site owners and their customers, and added a content management system (CMS) so that the site owners can add text and images at their convenience. And all with a reasonable price tag.

In a world that pays so much attention to appearances, it's important to put your best foot forward, not only by offering products and services that truly deliver the intended result, but by presenting them to the consumer in a way that enhances their value.  We've all visited websites that could use improvement.  Inconsistent navigation menus, poor graphics, dead links and bad design don't reflect well on the website owner's business, even if the product or service is a good one.

Have Your Say
Most of our clients want to be able to add their own content (text & images) to their website. If you're having your website redesigned, this is the most cost-effective time to add a content management system (CMS). It will give you the means to have your say - any time you want!

Give Value, Get Value
Looking good is not enough! Give your customers value - benefits they can use - and they'll visit your website again and again. Celtfest has an Instructors' database, CR Metal Fabricators showcases their work with a photo gallery and ProFish Adventures features a site search function. These features (and many others) are valuable tools. They allow your potential and existing customers to better understand what your company can do for them before they even walk in the door.

Meet with us to discuss your needs, and you'll get good value. We'll advise you of the benefits of a variety of web features that will best suit the needs of your business and your customers. Make the web experience a good one, and viewers won't forget you when they need your product or services.

In each of the cases below, the re-vamp began with our usual complimentary meeting with the website owner or store manager to discuss the project and how we could meet their goals and objectives.
